Meet Your Teachers:
Emily McMillan is the proud owner of Abilene Yarn Co. I’ve been crafting and collecting craft supplies all my life, and crocheting up a storm for the past 15 years. I am currently working on improving my knitting skills so I can enjoy the Doodle Decks stranded colorwork!
Favorite AYC product: Ricorumi Nilli Nilli mini skeins and super cute coordinating pattern books.
Currently on my hook: Sirdar’s Summer Picnic blanket CAL! Countless store samples and swatches, and several hexagon cardigans for fall!
When I’m not crafting: I’m reading lots of fantasy books, trying to catch up on sleep or chauffeuring my kiddos around town! Maybe escaping to Vagabond for a date with my hubby!

FAQ & Class Policies
Class Details: Each one hour class is designed with fun and flexibility in mind, with a portion of teaching time, and then time to practice, get one-on-one assistance, and make progress on your project while visiting with your new friends. To ensure each participant receives personalized attention, enrollment is limited to 12 at the very max, though most classes are smaller than that. Out of fairness to our instructor, we have a student minimum to conduct each session. Each class must have at least 3 students to “make”. Any class that does not reach the minimum within 48 hours of the start of the class will be canceled and you will be notified, and a refund (or credit for a future class if you prefer) will be provided.
Cancellations: All class fees are due at the time of sign-up and are non-refundable, unless the class is canceled in which case fees will be refunded immediately. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. We know stuff happens and schedules change, so we keep a waitlist in the event a class is full and a cancellation arises. If we are able to fill your spot, we will refund your class fee. Please observe the weekly dates for each class to ensure your schedule will allow you to complete the class before signing up. One makeup session per month may be arranged according to the teachers’ schedule and availability.
What’s included: Beginner classes have all necessary supplies included, and some supplies that are just for funsies too. We realize you may not know what to get when you go to a yarn store, or what the differences are, so we’ve done all that hard work for you. Other classes will have a supply list provided, and convenient kits will be available for you to buy from us as well. We have complimentary coffee and a water dispenser for you and you are more than welcome to BYOB anything you’d like or stop by Front Porch or the United cafe on your way in.
Advanced Classes: Please review any pre-requisites and required skills for each non-beginner class prior to signing up and let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to meet with you for a private lesson to assess which class would be best for your skill level. The allotted class time does not account for the time required to teach the skills we cover in the Beginner classes. If you have any questions, please contact us before signing up and together we will make sure you are ready to get the most out of your class.
Kids: All of our classes are geared towards those age 12 and up, with the exception of any classes specifically identified as kids classes. Exceptions may be authorized by the class instructor prior to signing up. We love to meet with kiddos eager to learn but tend to find that private lessons work better with more one-on-one attention, and flexibility to work around school/extracurricular schedules and younger learning styles.
Lefties: We love our left-handed crafters and want you to know that you are welcome to learn with us at any of our classes. We feel strongly that most of the skills we learn require a bit of ambidexterity and often times a lefty can learn successfully from a right-handed teacher without any issues or with minor alterations. For knitters, both hands hold a needle equally. For crocheters, we can utilize the mirror technique if it feels best to hold your crochet hook in your left hand, or you can try using your right hand to hold your hook, knowing that your left hand is also doing some hard work controlling your yarn and tension. If you’d prefer to have a left-handed teacher, please reach out to us in advance and we will see what we can do to have someone available to assist you personally or we can schedule a private lesson with a left-handed teacher.
Scholarships: Owning a small business is expensive these days, and a yarn shop is more expensive to get up and running than most! But we truly want to teach as many people as we possibly can. If the cost of the classes is prohibiting you from learning, please reach out to us, and we will see if we have any scholarships available. Alternatively, if you’d like to provide a scholarship for someone wanting to learn, please let me know and we can arrange that as well. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!
